Semi-components are similar to components but do not typically perform any complete function on their own. A component would generally be made up of two or more semi-components, but this is not always the case, as a component can be a singular unit unto itself that performs one or more functions. Semi-components are generally an intermediate step above the material level, in which the material(s) have been processed in preparation for assembly into complete components.
Semi-components are generally created when a number of higher level components can utilize them, and despite increasing the complexity of general design, they can reduce costs and complexity for manufacture and assembly.
