A Component is the basal functional element of a larger assemblage. A component may or may not be made up of semi-components(see for more info), which shouldn't be confused with a component that is comprised of other components. When two or more components are assembled together to make a larger component, then the constituent components are generally referred to as sub-components. The terminology for a component is synonymous with and used interchangeably with terms like part or element, and may be referred to as such in any given context.
The creation of components is a way of standardizing the manufacturing process of finished goods as well as maintaining those goods in situations where they are consumed, damaged, or worn out through normal use. The ability to replace components in a final product or utilize existing components to create a newer product reduces costs overall as components become more common and are readily available.
There is a point in which the creation of separate components does not make sense, which is when it is more efficient to create a finished good by converting the base materials into a finished product through the expenditure of energy in one single step. This is generally the case when nano-technology allows for the manipulation of raw materials at the level in which they are made into the finished product without intermediate steps.
