Astrophysics is a branch of astronomy which deals primarily in the physics of the universe (hence the name)) This science studies the physical properties of the universe from the smallest scale to the largest and attempts to explain them all in the process. Astrophysicists generally study many disciplines of physics to assist in their research and understanding of the universe as a whole.

Astrophysics and Starship Design
Just Like astronomy, astrophysics is an important field of study for Starship designers and engineers. It is essential to be able to identify and predict many of scenarios that may come up for a given vessel, so that designing a vessel that can withstand the rigors that may be present within the universe is possible. Many areas of starship design such as propulsion, sensors, power generation, and more depend upon this discipline for the exacting specifications needed for these systems to perform as intended, and minimizing the probability for catastrophe.
