Astronomy is the scientific study of celestial objects and other phenomena originating beyond the confines of ones home planet (in our case this is Earth.) These studies include the observation of many things from the smallest rock, to the largest structures of the universe. Astronomy is closely related and distinctly tied to Astrophysics, and the two often go hand in hand when doing research.

Astronomy and Starship Design
It isn't practical to attempt to design a vehicle to operate within a medium that you know little to nothing about. Hence knowledge of astronomy is essential to designers and engineers of various forms of star-craft to ensure that their designs are safe, reliable, efficient, and overall work. Even though the fields of starship engineering and design go far beyond astronomy alone, astronomy is perhaps one of the most essential fields of study and the basis for almost other aspects of starship design in general.
